Skin Series: Mens Grooming

Fellas, this one’s for you. I know, I know…when you think of skin care, you think of girly products that smell like flowers and sweets. In fact, 30% of the skin care industry consists of men's skin care. Companies have created products with you in mind. 2 in 1 cleansers that can be used for hair, face and body. Facial tonic that you can spray. Moisturizers that keep skin nice and matte. According to statista.com, the top 5 skin care brands for men in the U.S are Dove Men, Nivea, L'Oreal for Men, Aveeno, Gold Bond and Neutrogena. These are all drug store brands, which means you can find them in stores like WalMart, Walgreens, CVS and so forth and they are super affordable.

Making sure you’re cleansing, toning and moisturizing is the goal for you. Keep in mind that your facial skin is twice as thick as a woman’s skin, which means you’re more prone to oil build up. A cleanser that’s going to penetrate deep into pores is what you’ll need. Mattifying toning pads or an oil absorbing spray would be more your style, and a light, oil-free moisturizer would be ideal.

"But what if I have a beard?" Guess what!?! There are also products made to cleanse, hydrate, and style your beard too! Brands like Redken, Jack Black and Kiehl's have made it easy to take care of your beard and the precious skin underneath. Cleansing daily is key to keeping your facial coat shiny and tangle-free.

Don't think I forgot about you guys that like to have the clean cut and shaven look. Make sure when shaving to go in the direction that hair grows so that you don't irritate your skin. It cuts down the amount friction on the skin and reduces the number of hair bumps you'll get. When choosing a shave cream or gel, look for ingredients like aloe vera or lavender. Believe it or not, ingredients matter, so paying attention to what you apply to your skin is important. Stay away from alcohol based products that will just dry your skin out. I know it sounds great if you have oilier skin, but stripping skin of its natural oils will cause it to reproduce more oil. After shave and moisturizer are NOT the same thing. You need them both! Your aftershave is to help sooth your skin post shave. Your moisturizer helps to keep your skin hydrated all day. See the difference?

Look guys, I know this is a lot of info here but I promise it's all essential to keep your skin up to par. Women like a man that knows how to care for himself. Pedicures aren't just for girls and neither is skin care. Feel free to visit the comments if you have questions for me. Until next time...
